What is Shou Sugi Ban?

We use a process called "Shou Sugi Ban". This woodworking process originated in Japan and involves taking a raw piece of cedar and burning it to a deep char coaled finish. The charred wood is scraped and cleaned, removing all the excess black charring. This process results in a deep texture between the hard and soft wood, highlighting the natural grain of each piece.
Shou Sugi Ban is very durable and water proof. It was used as siding for traditional Japanese buildings, recently it is becoming very popular in Europe and North America.

When the wood is cleaned we start the coloring process or keep the wood in it's natural color. For protection, several coats of varnish are applied.
