What is Shou Sugi Ban?
To make these flags, we use a process called "Shou Sugi Ban". This woodworking process originated in Japan and involves taking a raw piece of cedar and burning it to a deep char coaled finish. The charred wood is scraped and cleaned, removing all the excess black charring. This process results in a deep texture between the hard and soft wood, highlighting the natural grain of each piece.
Shou Sugi Ban is very durable and water proof. It was used as siding for traditional Japanese buildings, recently it is becoming very popular in Europe and North American modern design.
Once the cedar has gone through this process, we start coloring the wood and for protection, several coats of gloss varathane are applied until we reach the desired finish.
